Saturday, May 8!

Three Area Historic Museums Celebrate National Train Day

Saturday, May 8, 2021 marks and important day in United States History and three area museums are making plans to celebrate.  The Milam County Railroad Museum, the Hearne Depot and the Rockdale I&GN Depot are celebrating National Train Day together with what they are calling a “Triple Header”, a term used when three locomotives are coupled together to pull a train.  The event will run from 10 AM until 6 PM.

National Train Day is held each year on the Saturday closest to May 10, the anniversary of the pounding of the Golden spike in Promontory, Utah, which marked the completion of the first transcontinental railroad.

Each of the Museums will be sharing their unique railroad displays and memorabilia.  The three museums will also be running their model railroad trains for everyone to enjoy.

Hearne will display a large “N” scale model train layout and have the Kiddie Train running for children to ride (from 1:00 – 4:00 — FREE) You will also be able to check out their new ‘railfan’ platform nearlng completion!..

Rockdale will unveil their two new model displays, an “N” scale built by local resident Nolan Bland and a new “O” scale built by the Milam County Railroad Club. You can also hop aboard a Missouri Pacific Caboose and Dining Car.

The Milam County Railroad Museum in Cameron will show off “Old Town Cameron”, built by local resident John Johnson.  OTC was recently featured on The Texas Bucket List and is an accurate portrayal of Cameron in the 1950-s

Each museum has also prepared activities for the kids. The three museums are located next to operating rail lines so you might see a Union Pacific (UP) or Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train pass by a museum!

In addition to enjoying the three venues, the Museums have added one more enticement.  When you make a $5.00 donation to the first museum you visit on Train Day, you will be given a special ticket.  If you get your ticket punched at all three Museums on the 8th, you may drop the ticket in a box at the last destination and be eligible for a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to either Amazon, Best Buy or Wal-Mart.
